In this black and white ode to the turbulent summer of ’68, Philippe Garrel cast his own son, also a ‘fruit’ of May 68. François (Louis Garrel) wants to avoid his military service and fills his days with opium, poetry and sleeping. When he meets Lilie (Clotilde Hesme), they begin a difficult relationship that is not always in line with the ideals for which they stand together on the barricades.
As a ‘prodigy of the Nouvelle Vague’, Garrel brings this golden age back into his film, forty years later. As a counterpart to “The Dreamers” by Bertolucci, this is all but a romantic view of the revolution.
