White Cube, 2021, Renzo Martens, 67′
English, French, Swahili – Subtitles: French, Dutch

White Cube is a documentary film by artist and filmmaker Renzo Martens (Enjoy Poverty). The film shows the relationship between Western art museums and the violence of the plantation system. Many museums are built with the profits from the plantations. In White Cube, Congolese plantation workers set a new precedent. They successfully co-opt the concept of the ‘white cube’ to buy back their land from international plantation companies and secure it for future generations.

Renzo Martens studied Political Science at the University of Nijmegen and Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He then stayed at the ISCP in New York and in 2013 Renzo Martens was one of the sixteen participants in the Yale World Fellow Program, the signature leadership programme of Yale University. He was also the project coordinator of a doctoral research project in the arts entitled A Gentrification Programme in Congo. He has lectured on art, economics and representation at numerous universities around the world.
